Frank Watlington was in Bermuda at the time of recording. He was using a hydrophone to detect sound coming from Soviet submarines during the Cold War. One day, he noticed strange, ethereal noises that turned out to be the song of a humpback whale. As it turns out, two whales can be heard in the full recording. An excerpt of that same full recording can be found in Songs of the Humpback Whale by Dr. Roger Payne. It was this album that introduced humpback whale songs to the world. It unexpectedly became a smash hit, selling 100,000 copies and eventually going multi-platinum.
