It was mainly used for when somebody does a take, generally used for a comedic effect, but can oddly enough be used as a twang sound as well.

Its earliest known usage was in The Ruff and Reddy Show episode "Night Flight Fright", released on December 14, 1957, and later would find its way into other Hanna-Barbera shows as well, like The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Quick Draw McGraw Show, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, and others. It would also make its way to other studios like Disney, Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. Its' first appearance without Hanna-Barbera was in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies short "Go Away Stowaway!" released on September 30, 1967. Its' first TV show appearance withour Hanna-Barbera was in Garfield and Friends, sometime in 1988. It's still often used in modern media today.
