On April 20, 1971, William Randall created this sound effect by using a .44 Magnum hand gun. Originally a Warner Bros. sound effect; it debuted in Dirty Harry on December 23 of the same year. Then, it appeared in many different action films throughout the 1970s to the 1990s.
