Back in 1942, Jimmy MacDonald used a jew's harp to create 7 different types of twangy boings. Originally a Disney sound effect, it made its debut in the Donald Duck cartoon, "The Vanishing Private" on September 25, 1942.

Starting in the mid 1950s, other studios like UPA, Jay Ward Productions and Warner Bros. would later use the sound in their cartoons. In the summer of 1992, The Hollywood Edge added this cartoon boing sound effect to the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 library. In 2014, Sound Ideas took over to acquire it after the bankruptcy of The Hollywood Edge.

Identical copies of this sound are: BOING, CARTOON - BOING WITH QUIVER, BOING, CARTOON - RAPID VIBRATING BOING (2nd boing in a high pitch), BOING, CARTOON - VIBRATING BOING 01 (4th boing in a high pitch) and BOING, CARTOON - VIBRATING BOING 02 (3rd boing in a high pitch) on the Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends Sound Effects Library, COMEDY - BOING 03 on the Universal Studios Sound Effects Library, Classic Springy 2 (slowed-down edit of 7th boing) on Bainbridge Records - Living Sound Effects Volumes 5-8 and COMEDY, BOING - BIG J HARP SPROING on the Classic TV Sound Effects Library.

It's included as part of BOINK, CARTOON - PIXIE AND DIXIE BOINKS (2nd and 3rd boings) can be found on Hanna-Barbera Sound Effects Library.

A very sped-up version of this effect is included as part of Sound Ideas, Comedy Boink Motor - Cartoon motor with random boinks, bloops and spring noises on the Sony Pictures Sound Effects Library Volumes 1-5.

Today, it is one of the most common cartoon boing sounds and has been heard in more than a thousand pieces of media (like SpongeBob SquarePants, The Loud House, Teen Titans Go!, Big City Greens and Barney & Friends)

The 1st boing is more popular than the last 6 boings, so it is heard in most media (like Arthur, Barney & Friends, Dragon Tales, The Big Comfy Couch and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, as well as being a ringtone on iOS devices). The last 6 boings are less commonly heard (like Bill Nye, the Science Guy, Goof Troop and Blue's Clues).
