On July 1941, this sound effect was recorded by Jimmy MacDonald at the now-defunct Walt Disney Productions in Burbank, California for the Disney sound effects library. To record this sound, he used a siren whistle to create a quick whistle zip sound.

Originally a Disney sound effect, as it made its first appearance in the Donald Duck short, "Truant Officer Donald" on August 1, 1941.

One of its first TV appearance may be in the Sesame Street animated segment, "Detective Work - Traps" on May 10, 1989. Its first movie appearance may be in the Disney animated musical film, Aladdin on November 25, 1992.

In the summer of 1992, The Hollywood Edge added this cartoon whistle zip sound effect to the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 library. In 2014, The Hollywood Edge went out of business, due to bankruptcy. After that, Sound Ideas took over to acquire it, along with other The Hollywood Edge sounds.

This sound has still been used in most media today, along with other Disney cartoon sounds from the library. It's also a common zip sound effect used in many cartoons (like SpongeBob SquarePants, Rocko's Modern Life, The Ren & Stimpy Show, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! and Harvey Girls Forever!), many live-action children shows (like Barney & Friends, Bill Nye, the Science Guy, The Big Comfy Couch, Big Time Rush), some anime shows like (Pokémon and Hello Kitty's Paradise) and some TVB shows in Hong Kong (like Inspector Gourmet, Ghost of Relativity, Come On, Cousin, Don Juan DeMercado, The Rippling Blossom and Your Class or Mine).

There's also another sound effect called Ascending Whistles CRT057901 from Cartoon Trax Volume 1 that has a different variation made from the same siren whistle used in this one.
