This sound effect was first created sometime in the early 1980s by a sound designer at Echo Sound Services, and debuted in the music video for the Michael Jackson song "Thriller" and the film The Day After in 1983. In 1985 the Soundelux post-production studio acquired the sound, and in 1990, The Hollywood Edge picked up this sound and added it to The Premiere Edition Volume 1 library. Then in 2014, Sound Ideas took over to acquire this sound after the bankruptcy of The Hollywood Edge.

It's the same sound as Whistling Wind Stead PE033301 from the same library. Two similar sounds, Gusts Heavy HowlingW PE032501, and Whistling Wind Stead PE033401, are also available on the same library.
