Originally a Universal effect, the sound effect was originally made by Walter Lantz in the mid 1950s. It was first heard on various Walter Lantz and Woody Woodpecker cartoons, but it is currently to be announced which one first used it.

The Hollywood Edge would later add this sound to the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 library in 1992. After their bankruptcy, Sound Ideas took over to acquire it.

Today, it is heard in lots of media. It's one of the only sound effects created by Lantz that can actually be used; unlike so, most sound effects in the cartoons would be interrupted or taken over by music or voices.
