It was mainly used for when someone looks back when hiding behind a tree or a wall, or when an object bounces up in the air.

Its earliest known usage in Warner Bros. cartoons is in "Porky's Naughty Nephew", a Porky Pig short from 1938, and later would find its way into other TV shows as well. Its' first movie appearance in modern media was in The Wiggles Movie, first released on December 18, 1997. It's still often used in modern media today, especially in shows like The Book of Pooh, Connie the Cow and A Little Curious.
